SPRING TIPS
Now is the time to add salt to your pond. We have never been proponents of adding salt regularly to your pond. Most reasons for adding salt are based on old information that is no longer valid. For us, the main reason to add salt to your pond in the spring is to help the fish when they are at their weakest. When a fish comes out of dormancy, it is weak from the winter and having gone months without food. That is a prime setting for bacteria and disease to take hold. Adding salt at this time helps rebuild the fishes red blood cells and boost its immune system.
For ponds of about 500 gal. add 1 cup of salt. For larger ponds 500 to 1500 gal. 2 cups should be sufficient. For ponds over 1500 gal. 3 cups should do it.
Please do not overfeed this early in the season. Use only a low protein spring food and feed that very sparingly until your fish are more active and your water temperatures have risen above 65 degrees or so.
We would love to sell you fish and we have taken alot of flak for not having more fish SOONER in the season but its just not a good idea to add new fish when the water temperatures are still hovering around 50 degrees. And buying bargain price fish from a bait shop or from a 'farm' can bring a myriad of disease organisms from bacterial to parasitic. 20.00 a pound may seem like a hell of a deal but when you add those fish to your established pond, many times with fish you have had several years, you can end up with the problems those customers are having.
John and I have over 40 years combined in fish husbandry and John is especially knowledgeable with disease and parasites and we can many times help fix a mistake but you have to catch it early. We cannot guarantee you Will never have problems with the fish you buy for K.C. Pond but you can be assured we will not sell you poor quality livestock. We carefully select our suppliers and we know how to handle fish! If you have a problem give us a call!!!
Our new phone number is 816 842 5012. For regular customers you can see the number is one digit higher than the original River City number of 816 842 5011. We did that purposely so everyone would have an easier time getting used to the new number!! We hope it works out that way and that you start calling to let us know you have found us. We are really excited about opening for the 2011 pond season and look forward to building an even better company.
